Do I need an Asbestos Building Register?

If someone constructed a building before 31 December 1989, a manager, building owner, or Person Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must ensure that a comprehensive asbestos register is available on-site.

This register must be available to staff, contractors, or others within the facility or site. The report should outline the location of any asbestos and detail the existing management plan or hierarchy of control. Review it at least every five years or if:

• We have identified additional asbestos or ACM in the workplace.
• Someone conducts remediation of some asbestos.
• Management reviews the plan for asbestos in the workplace.

The register needs to identify items where reasonably practicable, such as the type of asbestos, whether it is friable or non-friable, who the “competent” person was that completed the register, etc.
